What is the HARP Mortgage Refinance Program?

HARP, or the Home Affordable Refinance Program, was created in 2009 to assist Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with the refinance and modification of loans for borrowers who currently owed more than their house was worth. Most recently, on October 24th, 2011, the HARP program was modified to include more homeowners and also extend the program until December 31st, 2015.

How do I know if the HARP Program is right for me?

While the HARP program isn’t for everyone who has a mortgage, it can be extremely helpful to those who can qualify. Here is a list of criteria that must be met to Qualify for a HARP Mortgage Loan:

  • Your current mortgage MUST be a loan insured by either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. (This is different from the bank or company who services your loan. We can tell you if your current loan meets this criteria)
  • Your existing mortgage MUST be paid current and you cannot have any late payments on your mortgage over the past 12 months.
  • The new mortgage payments must make financial sense. Meaning, they should be less than your current mortgage payment.
  • You must be currently living in the home.
